Our Name, Our History

In ancient times, a raised platform, or Tupa, was used by fishermen to observe the sea. Today, Tupa Hotel maintains one of the most spectacular locations with amazing views over the West coast of Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, and the central town of Hanga Roa.

Built by renowned native archaeologist and former governor Sergio Rapu Haoa, the hotel has served as a home to several notable figures including Thor Heyerdal, Norwegian explorer and author of the famous book Aku Aku.

Rapa Nui is the most remote island in the Pacific Ocean.  Beyond our moai statues, archeological sites, and Polynesian culture, travelers come to our island to enjoy its natural and simple beauty.  Tupa Hotel offers 40 rooms of different categories and prices in order to allow for everyone to experience the magic of our island.

We continue our long history of welcoming explorers by helping today’s adventurers discover the richness the island has to offer. Car rental services are provided on site, as well as coordination of private tours, group tours, horse back rides, and much more. Whether on an organized tour or exploring on one’s own, our knowledgable staff can help plan the trip of a lifetime.

Location

The hotel is located just one block off of the main road of the town of Hanga Roa, and only a 5 minute drive from the Mataveri Airport (IPC). Travelers can easily walk to a variety of restaurants, shops, pubs, and the coast line in about 5 minutes.  The ceremonial complex of Tahai is about a 15 min walk across town.  All the other sites can be reached via taxi, rental car, or guided tour.  Please email us or ask the receptionist for more information.
