VEHICLE RENTALS
For a great experience exploring Easter Island on your own, rent a Jeep, motor scooter, quad bike (4x4), or bicycle. Most of the major roads in the country side are paved and fairly simple to navigate. However, a few roads (the road to Puna Pau and Ahu Akivi, the road to Orongo, and the road between Tongariki and Anakena) are unpaved and may require the use of 4-wheel drive after heavy rains. Consult with your rental agent about the condition of these roads before traveling on them.

Bicycles are a great way to get around the town and to sites near Hanga Roa. A bike ride to the other side of the island (Anakena Bay) is only recommended for persons in good health. There is NO cell phone or radio communication available outside of the town. Please gather more information before attempting this trek on your own.

We work with reliable companies that regularly maintain their vehicles, but their prices may occasionally fluctuate depending on availability. Here are a list of average prices:

Important Information
To rent any motorized vehicle on the island the driver must present a valid driver's license for that type of vehicle and a credit card for the deposit. Most rental companies will not let you take their vehicles off roading, and hefty fines are given to those who do. Because there are few bathroom facilities and restaurants outside of Hanga Roa, make sure to pack enough water for the day. Public bathrooms and food and drink are available at Rano Raraku and Anakena Bay. Bathrooms cost US$1 per entry.

Making a reservation for a vehicle is not always necessary. A number of rental companies that accept walk-ins are readily accessible off the main street in Hanga Roa. However, if you are interested in making a reservation ahead of time please indicate it when booking your room.

TOURS

There are several tour options available. All tours usually include English and Spanish-speaking tour guides.

Private Tours
For groups of 2-3 people we recommend a private tour. These are customizable to what you would like to see and include a personal tour guide and private car. These range around US$280 per day for up to 3 people. There is also a half day option available for this type of tour.

Recommended DAY1: Northeastern & Southeastern Coasts including Anakena Bay, Rano Raraku statue quarry, Ahu Tongariki (largest ceremonial structure in Polynesia), among other sites on the south and east coasts.

Recommended DAY2: West Coast & Hanga Roa including ceremonial village of Orongo and Rano Kau, Ahu Tahai, the town of Hanga Roa, and several other sites nearby.

Some of these locations are difficult to get to when there has been a lot of rain. If there are particular sites that you don't want to miss we recommend you speak with your tour guide to find out what day would be best to visit them.

Group Tours
There are full day and half day options available for these tours. These tours tend to be cheaper (about US$65 for a full day) but there is less flexibility as you follow the day's set tour. Group size tends to be no larger than 15 ppl, but this is determined by the tour agency. Because group tour schedules vary, the hotel manager can provide more information and help you book a tour upon your arrival to the island.

Other Options
Horseback Riding Tours
Scuba Diving
Boat Excursions
Cave Exploration

See the hotel manager for more information about these options and recommended companies.

Food & Water
If you are planning on full day excursions we recommend that you bring rain gear, water, hiking shoes, and food. Sometimes the weather changes quickly on the island, which makes for a great adventure and gorgeous skies!

Picnic meals can be prepared for you at the hotel. Please let the manager know if you would like this option

ADDITIONAL FEES
Unless explicitly stated by the tour operator, none of the tours include a park fee or museum fee.

Park Fees (US$60 / person)
All the coastal land and archaeological sites on Easter Island make up a national park. Each person must purchase a national park ticket to visit any of the sites on the island. These tickets can be purchased at the entrance of either Orongo or Rano Raraku. This ticket lasts for 5 days and must be carried with you while visiting the sites. A park ranger may ask you at any time to view your ticket. These fees help to protect and preserve these fragile UNESCO world heritage sites for future generations to enjoy.

Museum Fees (US$2 / entry)
Museo Padre Sebastian Englert is the only indoor museum on the island. Its displays feature unique artifacts and information about various sites on the island. Most of the displays are in Spanish, but translations in several different languages are available at the museum entrance. Entrance fees are only valid for one visit.

Restroom Fees (US$1 / entry)
Only two restroom facilities are available outside of the town of Hanga Roa: at the entrance of Rano Raraku and at the Anakena Bay parking.
